Our recommended route for the best of Tokyo would be to start in Harajuku visiting Meiji Jingu a shrine hidden in the middle of the city under a 120,000 trees donated to this beloved emperor responsible for the restoration of imperialisation to Japan and the opening of trade and travel in and out of Japan from 1868 after over 200 years of isolation. Harajuku is also home of Yoyogi Park and the 1964 olympics. Perhaps catch a train or work your way through the busy shopping streets from cos-play to the chic high end brands you’ll find yourself at the busiest cross road in the world in Shibuya with an estimated 3000 people crossing every three minutes. Meet your leaders and head coach Brenton Ford this evening who will brief you on your week here in Japan detailing the daily highlights of culture, tradition, adventure and swimming for your stay followed by a welcome dinner to introduce you to the oishi (delicious) food options here in Japan.
This morning we wake up early to catch breakfast at Tsukiji market – the kitchen of Tokyo – and, if possible, a training session for sumo, you’ll be surprised at the intensity and fitness of these athletes. We will then catch the train to Izu, Matsuzaki passing views of Japan’s most sacred and tallest mountain, Mt Fuji, traditional towns and rice fields you go through a tunnel and arrive at the coast, with beautiful clear beaches and cliffs and points to be explored, we have arrived in Matsuzaki. Transferred to Matsuzaki-so ran local hotel on mountain looking out at the sea. Just down the hill is beach where you get your first taste of Japanese beaches.
This afternoon marks the beginning of your swimming as we swim 3km from the beach – a great start to your holiday looking at stunning volcano formed coastline with local fisherman watching your progress from the shore and golden beaches coming into view below the tree lined mountains Izu Peninsula is famous for. Shallow sea becomes deep ocean here but this is a calm section with beautiful protected beaches to start our journey from. Your coach Brenton will also film you for your first video analysis session.
Dinner this evening will be at your accommodation – Japan style.
Izu Matsuzaki-so stands in front of Suruga Bay. The hotspring bath is on the hotel top floor, and you can enjoy the open-air bath while looking out at the beautiful Matsuzaki coastline. The hotel’s restaurant “SUNSET” faces the ocean, and you can enjoy the delicious meals while looking out at Suruga Bay. Enjoy a course featuring local fish, delicious shrimp and shellfish, enjoy few glasses of local sake, rest your body after swimming, and enjoy a relaxing time at Izu Matsuzaki-so.
Wake up to a morning overlooking the ocean on your mountain home and enjoy fresh fruit from the garden as part of your breakfast. A warm morning will see us in the sea early for a pre breakfast dip and some beach fun. Surfers will be out early with big smiles and plenty of waves and questions for us.
Iwachi is also home to annual open water swim event so today we will read the conditions and set up two 1.8 km swims that can be done in race conditions or a nice relaxed swim.
We swim the ‘Silent Beach’ – Kumomi Beach – in Nishi Izu with its great coastline and head to Ishibu beach. Both beaches have outdoor onsen – local fresh water springs – and you are welcome to enjoy a soak in this warm bath as it meets the sea. A very unique experience.
This afternoon is free to explore the rolling hills, relax on the beach or enjoy another onsen, you will also have the option for a sunset run, swim run session before dinner back at the accommodation.
Resting your body like the Japanese do we stay at the family ryokan of Matsuzaki where you can experience a traditional onsen soaking in the natural minerals to relax and revitalize your body. .
Dinner will be prepared by your accommodation, including freshly caught fish from the local port
After breakfast we leave our friends from Senganmon to Hagachizaki Beach, a unique start to the day as you are walking through a cave to commence the swim session. Our day today – 2 X 2 km swims cut in half by a beach lunch and either relaxing (you are on holiday), a technique session or coasteering session. Today is a day for the most adventurous types and you can do all of these things with our guide who will take you on a hike to the Sankyo-observation deck and visit the Muroiwa cave, to climb to the highest rock for views stretching as far as you can see.
Dinner tonight will be at the hotel restaurant and some warm or cold sake, a good touch of immersing into Japan.
This morning’s swim takes us along a breathtaking 2 km stretch from Sehama Beach to Futo Beach, supported by both boat and kayak. The route offers sweeping views of Nishi Izu’s rugged coastline, with clear blue water and dramatic rock formations shaped by ancient volcanic activity. With a mix of open water and sheltered sections, it’s an ideal swim to find your rhythm and enjoy the immersive experience of Japan’s west coast from the sea.
If the tide is low when we arrive at Futo Beach, take a moment after the swim to explore the natural tide pools that form along the rocky shoreline. These pools create miniature marine ecosystems, offering a glimpse of sea anemones, crabs, and other intertidal life—perfect for those with a curious eye and a love of coastal nature.
Spend the afternoon at your own pace. You might choose to soak in the local Heirokujizo Onsen, a traditional hot spring where you can unwind while enjoying views of the ocean. For those looking to explore further, a visit to the Kumomi Sengen Shrine, perched above the coastline, offers a moment of quiet reflection and panoramic views. Whether you’re seeking rest or cultural discovery, this afternoon invites you to experience Nishi Izu’s slower rhythm.
Today’s swim takes place at Ohama Beach, a beautiful stretch of sand known for its clear, calm waters and relaxed atmosphere. Framed by pine trees and low cliffs, the beach offers a tranquil setting ideal for enjoying the rhythm of open water swimming for our over 4km swim. With minimal surf and good visibility, it’s a perfect location to settle into your stroke, take in the surrounding landscape, and appreciate the simplicity of swimming in such a peaceful natural environment.
Some karaoke small Japanese fishing village style is an option for our final Izu area stay tonight or you can save yourself for tomorrows final long swim.
Our final swimming day takes place at a beach near the hotel offering a memorable and scenic swim along this beautiful stretch of coastline. This is the event we have been leading up to with this final swim. The area offers great views of Fuji should the weather and clouds be kind to us. While challenging, the longer swim is designed to stretch those looking to finish by pushing themselves having built up over the weeks swims. Again support and fins are available for those who wish to enjoy the experience with lots of smiles, frequent stops to check on Fuji and a lower heart rate.
We say good bye the Izu after lunch and head to Tokyo’s neon light district for a change of scenery to our island escape and have a great final meal and chat over the week just passed.
There are no activites on the final day, and you are free to leave at any time after breakfast.
Arrive into either Narita International Airport (NRT) and Haneda Airport (HND) on July 2nd before 2pm and make your way to the hotel. Our first activity is a Tokyo city tour and dinner
