Can Less ‘High Elbow’ & ‘Less Rotation’ Be Faster?

Today’s video is a little bit grainy but you can still get a pretty good idea of how this person is swimming. We’ve got two angles here, one from the side and one from the front. Looking from the side, there are a couple of things that we want to look for.

1. Recovery – You will see that he is coming up a little bit high with that hand to be close to his body. This position, when the elbow is kind of very close to the body and it’s close to the center is not the most comfortable looking position. This position will put a bit of strain on the shoulder you are not necessarily get injured from it but it’s a bit of an awkward position. What it does is it causes you to over rotate through the shoulders and when that happens, you’re going to lose some balance with your rotation and it is going to be hard to get into a powerful position with his arm in the water. We want to come around a little bit wider than that.

3. Entry – The entry is a bit too wide, it is slightly outside of the shoulder width.

A couple of things that we’d look to do, recover a little bit wider, swing it around more, don’t come so close to the body. Secondly, bring the entry in line with the shoulders so everytime that you enter and extend, follow the line in line with your shoulder. Rotate a bit less when you breathe.

Brenton and Mitch were great to work with at the clinic, Good to get video analysis to work on straight away, practice some new drills and go home knowing what you need to work on.
