Can you swim in glasses?
Short answer: no. Not in any way you’ll enjoy.
Glasses can’t sit under goggles — the arms break the seal along the temple, so you’ll be swimming with a flooded goggle from the first push-off. Worn on their own, they fog immediately, they slide when you rotate, and one tumble turn puts them on the bottom of the pool.
Some people wear them on the pool deck and take them off at the wall. That works for finding your lane. It does nothing for the 45 minutes in between.
So the real question isn’t glasses versus goggles. It’s what you do instead of glasses once you’re in the water.
Can you swim with contacts in?
Plenty of swimmers do it. It works, right up until it doesn’t.
The standard advice is not to. Water and contact lenses don’t mix well, and most eye-care professionals advise against wearing lenses in the pool, the ocean, a lake or a hot tub. The reasoning is straightforward: a contact lens sits directly against your eye and holds whatever it touches there. Pool water and open water are not sterile, and a soft lens is very good at trapping what’s in them against your cornea.
The practical problems are just as real:
- Lenses move and stick. Water in the goggle can shift a lens off centre, or it can suction tight to the eye when it dries out.
- One lens lost ends the session. Anyone who has swum in contacts has had the moment where they surface, blink, and find half the world has gone soft.
- Your goggles have to be perfect. A goggle that leaks a little is a minor annoyance normally. In contacts, it’s the whole risk.
- Eyes get irritated. Chlorine and a lens together tend to leave eyes drier and redder than either would alone.
If you’re going to do it anyway — and many swimmers will — the sensible version is daily disposables you throw out immediately after the swim, goggles that genuinely seal, keeping your eyes closed if you have to clear water in the goggle, and a conversation with your optometrist about your own eyes rather than a general rule from a blog. If a lens does come out, don’t fish it out of the water and put it back in.
The honest summary: it’s the option people default to, not the option people would choose.
Prescription swim goggles
This is the one most swimmers don’t realise exists, and it’s the one that solves the problem outright.
Optical goggles have the corrective lens built into the goggle itself. No inserts, no contacts, no glasses. You put them on like any other pair and the pool comes into focus.
They come in a range of set strengths for shortsightedness — the minus numbers on your prescription — so you pick the strength closest to your own rather than getting lenses ground to order. That’s why they cost roughly what a good pair of normal goggles costs instead of what real optical work costs.
Choosing the strength is the only part people get stuck on, and it’s mostly one rule: start from the distance number on your prescription, and round down if you land between two available strengths. What it changes: you read the pace clock. You see the far wall coming. In open water you can actually pick out the buoy instead of following whoever is nearest and hoping they know where they’re going.
The trade-off is that off-the-shelf optical goggles correct the spherical part of your vision, not astigmatism, and both eyes get the same strength. For swimming — where you’re reading a clock and a black line, not fine print — that’s usually more than enough. Optical swim masks
A swim mask is the middle ground between a goggle and a dive mask: a single lens across both eyes with a larger skirt that seals around the eye sockets rather than in them.
Masks are worth considering if:
- You swim mostly open water and want the widest possible field of view for sighting.
- You find normal goggles press uncomfortably into your eye sockets on long swims.
- You want the bigger air pocket, which some swimmers find less claustrophobic.
Optical versions exist in two forms — masks with corrective lenses built in, and dive-style masks that accept prescription lens inserts fitted by an optician. The catch is drag and turns. A mask is bigger, it catches more water, and it’s not what you want for a session of hard 100s off the wall. For a steady open-water swim, that hardly matters.
Swimming blurry on purpose
This is a legitimate choice, and I want to say so plainly, because a lot of swimmers have quietly made it and assume they’re doing something wrong.
In a pool, you don’t need much vision. The black line is high contrast and close to your face. The wall arrives with or without your input. Flags tell you the wall is coming even if you can’t count. If you swim alone, at your own pace, without a clock, blurry works.
What blurry costs you is the clock and the crowd. You can’t run send-offs. You can’t check a split. In a busy lane you can’t read the traffic — who’s about to push off, who you’re about to swim into. And in open water it’s genuinely limiting, because sighting is the whole navigation system.
A few things make it more workable: swim in a lane with a big deck clock rather than a small one, use a watch you can hold two inches from your face, and write your set on a laminated card at the end of the lane in letters far larger than feels reasonable.
But be honest about the trade. Most swimmers who go blurry aren’t choosing it — they just never found out the alternatives were this simple.
Which option fits you
- Pool swimmer, shortsighted, wants to train properly: prescription goggles. It’s the cheapest meaningful upgrade in swimming.
- Open water and triathlon: prescription goggles, or an optical mask if you want the wider view and a softer seal.
- Complicated prescription — strong astigmatism, very different eyes: talk to your optometrist, and ask about a mask with custom inserts.
- Already comfortable in contacts and unwilling to change: daily disposables, a goggle that seals properly, and your optometrist’s advice on your own eyes.
- Swims easy laps alone and doesn’t care about the clock: blurry is fine. Genuinely.
