So now you have been through the six different parts of the stroke, the question is how do you put it all together?
Working with hundreds of swimmers of the past couple of years I have realised that the main reason that swimmers improve is through a drill program; a drill progressions that will take you through each part of the stroke.
In the Mastering Freestyle program we start out with the basics like balance and body position then we move through head position, using the arms, kick and rotation then putting it altogether to develop a fast but comfortable freestyle.
When swimmers go through drill progressions and they improve their technique one of the main things that they get out of it is that they find that their times will automatically drop down a couple of seconds for their 100m pace. This big drop is because of an automatic improvement on their body position and their pull. They are swimming easier and they are using less effort but they are swimming faster.
it is about becoming more comfortable in the water and finding that your stroke and your technique doesn’t take as much energy as it did before. It is like when a friend of mine went through the Mastering Freestyle program over the course of two days. What he found after those two days of doing drills for 1-2 hours that his times came down between 4-6 seconds for his 100m pace. He was a lot easier and using as much energy to do those 100m’s.
There is more than just one way to improve your swimming; you can increase your strength, you can increase your fitness through good and specific workouts. You can increase your flexibility; there are a number of ways in which you can improve.
One of the best ways that I have found is through video analysis. That is something we offer in Effortless Swimming Membership Program which is our online coaching membership where you get access to all of our technique videos and personal coaching. Swimmers get their stroke analysed by a coach who understands the mechanics of swimming. If you can get a front on angle above and below the water and a side on angle below the water then you will be able to see where you are going well with your stroke and where you have room for improvement for your technique.
