You can greatly improve your speed by changing your head postion.  Your head position determines your body position. It’s like the driver behind the wheel of a car, it determines where it goes.

Three keys to remember about head position:

  1. Look down or slightly forward – This keeps your legs high in the water, reducing drag.
  2. Breath towards your shoulder – I see a lot of swimmers breathing forward which throws their body out of alignment. Breathe towards your shoulder and keep one goggle in the water.
  3. Tuck your chin in – This lengthens the back of your neck and and is the crux of freestyle head position.

  1. Good work guys – excellent examples of what NOT to do followed by what TO DO! The other underlying problem I see with my swimmers is this leads to potential cramping as the body core line is interrupted and drags…. Keep up the good work – love the video representations!
