Have you ever been in the situation where you’re in a race and you’re next to someone who you feel you shouldn’t be beating, so you pull yourself back and you don’t allow yourself to pass that person?

I have lost races before because I didn’t have the confidence in order to swim faster than them. That is a confidence thing.

Confidence

If you’ve got the confidence to know that you can be faster than this person that you’ve got a mental block against, then you can really go on and achieve much better results with your swimming and with your sport.

My two favourite ways of building confidence are:

Experience: Getting more experience in your races or simulating race situations in your training

Have an “F U Attitude” towards your competitors in the race. You can be best friends outside the race but when you’re in there, I like to have that F U kind of attitude which will really give you the confidence to push ahead of that person who you’ve got a mental block against beating them.

  1. LOVE IT!!! Sometimes it takes an FU attitude to get you in the right frame of mind, especially when you have to compete against friends/training partners, who happen to be in your same age group. Thanks for reminding us that it is okay to have that mentality in the RACE!
