Once you’ve chosen your path get laser focused on it and that is often the best way to see results Welcome to the effortless swimming podcast to show that help swimmers and triathletes love the water become a better swimmer and live a better life Here’s your host Brenton Ford Hi Brenton Ford here. Welcome to the effortless swimming podcast today’s episode is about becoming a laser not a lantern and I heard this analogy used by another podcast at Aubrey Marcus And I think it applies really well to swimming and the difference between a laser and a lantern is that a lantern is broad spectrum Light it’s not focused on a particular point It can light up a small room, but the light itself isn’t very strong. If you compare that to a laser Which is a narrow spectrum light that tight focus Allows it to To have things such as laser cutting it allows that that laser beam to Travel over long distances and stay very narrow as it does it so what I what I encourage people to do when I’m coaching them is
Become like a laser have that narrow focus at least for six months At least for six months when you’re focusing on something and you’re trying to make a change or improve things at least give it six months before you choose to go broad spectrum to look for other ideas and try those Because I see so many people getting distracted by Facebook posts and Instagram posts from other athletes or coaches and it can be good to get different ideas from different people I think that’s really important But when it comes to once you’ve actually decided on a path to take and a Method to follow whether it be what we teach whether it be what your your own triathlon or your swimming coach is teaching Give that enough time to work and put the blinders onto it So if you’re constantly second-guessing whether or not you think you’re on the right path if you’re second-guessing Whether you’ve got the the right coaching or the right
focus Sometimes that can distract you and you don’t give the actual thing that you’re focusing on enough time to work So give whatever that that focus is give it at least six months to work So while it can be good to go from laser to lantern sometimes back and forth It’s good to feel those ideas and have that broad spectrum and look outside of what you’re doing once you’ve chosen your path get laser focused on it and that is Often the best way to see results if you’re jumping from coach to coach or jumping from methodology or idea to idea That’s probably not going to give it enough time to work So when it comes to your training, I like to go for the laser approach not the lantern approach if you’d like to get really laser focused on your swimming myself and Olympic swimming coach Gary Haring from New Zealand We’re going to be hosting a camp in Hawaii from March 20th to 26th And it’s going to be a small group of a maximum of 12 swimmers
Where we’ve got some is coming from all over the world and we’re going to laser in on your technique and your swimming and Be able to do it in a really small tight-knit group where we’re going to be doing underwater filming and analysis each day and we’re going to Pretty much just dial down what what’s the key one or two things that’s going to help you become a better swimmer and Be able to race better and compete better So if you’re a half-iron man or full-distance iron man athlete wanting to improve your swim come out feeling more confident knowing that you can actually get through the swim quite comfortably and Get your time down. This is a really good camp to be able to do that And the reason that I’ve kept it at 12 swimmers is because I want to be able to get laser focused with with each person And if you haven’t heard the podcast with I did it with Gary You’ll sort of hear about his the way he likes to use swimming and we’re very much in line with that
So if you’d like to be able to work on your swimming over the course of five days and do it where you’re constantly Refining your stroke learning more about swimming technique and what it takes to be able to compete at the higher levels Then the Hawaii camp is is a good fit So we’ve got about six spots left by the time you listen to this And if you go to effortlesswing.com click on the clinics and camps you’ll find the Hawaii link there And it’s from March 20th to 26 We’re going to be staying in Waikiki and Swimming at the Oahu Club, which is a pool about 20 minutes outside of Waikiki And we’ll also be doing an open water swim along the way and it’s going to be a really good fun camp So I’d be myself an Olympic swimmer and coach Gary Haring and we’ll be taking a small group of 12 swimmers over to Hawaii and Basically with that just to help you become a better swimmer So go to effortlesswimming.com if that sounds like something you’re interested in
