TL;DR: In a 25m pool, a true mile (1,609m) is about 64 lengths; in a 50m pool it’s about 32; in a 25yd pool it’s a little over 70. The “swimmer’s mile” of 1,650 yards is 66 lengths of a 25yd pool. Use the converter below for any distance and any pool.

One “length” = one end of the pool to the other. If you count a lap as there-and-back, halve the numbers.
How many laps is a mile of swimming?
A statute mile is 1,609.3 meters. So in round numbers:
- 25m pool: about 64 lengths (64.4 to be exact — most swimmers just swim 64 or round up to 66)
- 50m pool: about 32 lengths (32.2)
- 25yd pool: about 70 lengths (70.4)
One important word check: in everyday pool talk, a “lap” usually means one length of the pool — one end to the other. Some swimmers use lap to mean there and back. The numbers above are lengths; halve them if you count round trips.
The swimmer’s mile: 1,650 yards
Competitive swimming has its own “mile”, and it’s shorter than the real one.
The 1,650-yard freestyle — the longest event in short course yards competition — is called “the mile” even though it’s only about 1,509 meters, roughly 94 percent of a true mile. It’s a clean 66 lengths of a 25yd pool, which is exactly why the event exists at that distance.
So when a swimmer tells you they swam a mile, it’s worth asking which one they mean. Between the true mile, the 1,650 and the metric 1,500, “a mile” can be three different swims.
Laps for common swim distances
| Distance | 25m pool | 50m pool | 25yd pool |
|---|---|---|---|
| 400m | 16 | 8 | 17.5 |
| 750m (sprint tri) | 30 | 15 | 32.8 |
| 1km | 40 | 20 | 43.7 |
| 1500m (olympic tri) | 60 | 30 | 65.6 |
| 1650yd (swimmer’s mile) | 60.4 | 30.2 | 66 |
| 1 mile (1,609m) | 64.4 | 32.2 | 70.4 |
| 1900m (70.3 swim) | 76 | 38 | 83.1 |
| 3800m (Ironman swim) | 152 | 76 | 166.2 |
All figures are lengths of the pool. For triathlon distances, remember open water adds its own challenges — you can practice the fitness in the pool, but structure your sessions so some of them simulate race efforts without walls to rest on.

Frequently asked questions
How many laps is a mile in a 25 meter pool?
A true mile (1,609m) is 64.4 lengths of a 25m pool. Most swimmers swim 64 lengths and call it a mile, or 66 to be safely over the distance.
Is swimming a mile a good workout?
For most people, absolutely — a continuous mile is a solid aerobic session, and being able to swim one comfortably is a meaningful fitness milestone. As it gets easy, structured sets with pace changes will move your swimming forward faster than repeating the same continuous swim.
Why is the 1,650 called a mile?
Because it’s the closest event distance to a mile that divides evenly into a 25-yard pool: 66 lengths exactly. It’s about 6 percent short of a true mile, but the name stuck.
How long does it take to swim a mile?
It depends on your pace per 100. At 2:00 per 100m a mile takes about 32 minutes; at 1:40 per 100m about 27 minutes; at 1:20 per 100m about 21 minutes. Enter your own pace in the swim pace calculator to get your number.
