TL;DR: Enter any swim distance and time and this calculator gives you your pace per 100m and per 100yd, your speed, and what that pace works out to over common race distances — from a 400m time trial to an Ironman swim.

Distance Time at this pace

Projected times assume you hold the same pace — over longer distances most swimmers slow, so treat these as a best case.

Why pace per 100 is the number that matters

Swimmers don’t talk about minutes per kilometer the way runners do. Pool clocks, training sets and race plans all run on pace per 100.

Know your pace per 100 and you can answer the questions that actually matter in training: What should I hold for this 10 x 100 set? Is my open water pace close to my pool pace? What does my last race say about my target time for the next one?

It’s also the honest measuring stick. A watch can flatter you with total time, but pace per 100 tells you exactly how the swim really went.

Typical swim paces

Paces vary enormously with background, age and distance, so use ranges as orientation, not judgement:

  • New and developing swimmers often sit around 2:30 per 100m and slower — completely normal when technique is still coming together.
  • Regular fitness swimmers and age-group triathletes commonly swim between about 1:45 and 2:15 per 100m for longer efforts.
  • Strong club-level swimmers hold somewhere around 1:20 to 1:40 per 100m over distance.
  • Elite pool swimmers race 1500m under 1:00 per 100m — a useful reminder of how much technique is worth.

The gap between those groups is mostly not fitness. It’s how far each swimmer travels per stroke — which is a technique problem, and a fixable one.

How to improve your swim pace

Three things move the number more than anything else:

  • Find your threshold and train around it. Do a 400/200 test on our CSS calculator and set your training zones from the result instead of guessing.
  • Swim structured sessions. Aimless laps hold pace still. The structured workouts we use work the different energy systems on purpose.
  • Fix the technique leaks. Body position, breathing and catch are worth more seconds per 100 than fitness for most adult swimmers — start with the complete swimming technique guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good pace per 100m?

For adult fitness swimmers and triathletes, holding 1:45 to 2:15 per 100m over a longer swim is a common range, and breaking 1:40 per 100m for distance puts you ahead of most of the lane. But “good” is personal — the better question is whether your pace at the same effort is improving.

How do I convert my pace between meters and yards?

A yard is shorter than a meter (100yd is about 91.4m), so your per-100yd pace will always be faster than your per-100m pace — by roughly 9 percent. The calculator shows both automatically, so you don’t need to do the math.

Why is my open water pace slower than my pool pace?

No walls to push off, no line to follow, sighting, chop and drafting all change the picture. A gap of several seconds per 100 between pool and open water pace is normal. Good navigation and a relaxed breathing rhythm close most of it.

What pace do I need for my triathlon swim?

Work backwards from your goal time: enter the race distance and your target time in the calculator and you’ll get the pace per 100 you need to hold. Then test whether that pace is realistic with a CSS test — if it’s faster than your current threshold pace, train to raise the threshold before race day.
