In this video, we’re going to learn how to swim better by staying relaxed. We’ll go through 3 EASY STEPS to take your swimming to the next level. This not only helps you swim faster but also makes swimming feel easier.
Step 1: Relaxed Recovery
- The recovery phase of the stroke is important for staying relaxed.
- Tension in the hand and forearm during the recovery is a wasted effort.
- The hand and forearm should be relaxed, with the elbow leading the way
- Keeping the hand slightly wider during the recovery can help with relaxation.
- The fingertip drag drill with a wider hand position can help develop a relaxed recovery
- Wearing fins and a snorkel can aid in focusing on a relaxed recovery
Step 2: Correct Entry
- The fingertips should enter first, creating a triangle shape with the elbow slightly up
- It is important to avoid reaching out too far and landing with the elbow first
- Straightening the arm after entering will create a slapping sound with the elbow
- A recommended drill for practicing the correct entry is using a kickboard
- The hand should enter somewhere between the knuckles and the elbow
Step 3: Reach Phase
- It is important to actively reach forward and extend before starting the catch
- Reaching forward creates a streamlined position and reduces the drag
- The hand should be at the right depth, usually fingertips at about shoulder depth or arms completely straight under the water
- Being relaxed during the reach phase helps save energy and set up the catch better
- Feeling loose and generating a feel for the water is important during the reach phase
