With all of the analysis of swimmers that we do, one mistake that really stands out is the dropped elbow catch. Want to know why? It’s because of how the shoulder is positioned during the catch. If the shoulder is too low and far below the head, getting that high elbow position becomes really tough.
- A high elbow catch allows the hand and forearm to angle back against the water, aiding forward movement
- Dropping the elbow during the catch results in the hand and forearm pressing downwards, reducing forward propulsion
- A common struggle in achieving a high elbow catch is when the shoulder sits too far below the head or chin
- Focusing on keeping the shoulder up near the side of the face can help maintain a high elbow position
- The “Shoulder to Cheek Scoop” drill, using a paddle between the shoulder and cheek, can help develop the muscle memory for a high elbow catch
- Slow to fast movements in the stroke can improve the catch and overall stroke
