Welcome to the Effortless Swimming Podcast to show that help swimmers and triathletes love the water, become a better swimmer and live a better life. Here’s your host, Brenton Ford. Hi, Brenton Ford here. Welcome to the Effortless Swimming Podcast. One of the problems with the Olympics is that we see people in their peak physical state at a moment in time where they’ve worked towards this moment for many, many years. It can be five, 10, 15 years that this person has worked towards something. And we see it on TV, and then we try and compare ourselves to where they are in that moment. But we don’t see the early mornings, the five o’clock starts. We don’t see the effort, the sweat, the tears that go into that point in time. It’s all these little steps along the way that actually make the difference. And it’s the domino effect. If you think about trying to push over a really large domino, it really can’t be
done if it’s big enough because it requires too much weight to push over that domino. But you can actually push that large domino over if you start with a really small one and gradually build up. So what’s that domino, that very first domino? What’s that first small domino for you? I think back to when I was training for Ironman a year and a bit ago. And I’d never ridden a road bike before or not a time trial bike. And I went out on Beech Road in Melbourne with a friend of mine for a Saturday ride. And I think I went about 20 or 25 kilometres on the bike. And I was scared as hell with people flying past me, cars flying past me. I was really wobbly on the handlebars. I was afraid to reach down and get my drink bottle. And I look back at that now and go, oh my God, that was, you know, that was, I was such a newbie to riding. And then a couple of months later after practicing that enough, got to the point where my long
ride was 200K by myself solo going around the peninsula down in Melbourne. And but it all started with that very small domino of just getting out on the road starting. And I was nervous. I wasn’t confident. But then with enough practice, you can start to knock down those bigger dominoes. And the question I want to ask you is I want you to think about is what’s that small domino for you? So I’m looking at this rotten ass swim in in February that I’m going to be doing. And for me, I’ve been swimming for a very long time. But that first domino that I wanted to knock over was a it was a three K time trial, which I did at the end of how week over in Thailand with with two swimmers with Jaden Nathaniel. And that three K time trial, even though I wasn’t very fit for it and it didn’t feel great to me, knocking that little domino over has had an effect where about seven weeks later, since doing that, I’m at the stage where I did
three by three K with 100 recovery in between at the same pace that I did that first three K time trial in. So just that that initial one has helped me kind of get to the point where a three K time trial doesn’t seem that hard anymore. Whereas before that, I was dreading it, didn’t want to do it. I’d never done one in my life, but now it just seems like it’s it’s not a whole lot. So if you’re training towards a big event, what’s the next domino for you that’s going to help you knock down that overall goal or that really big domino at the very end? My name is Brentford Ford. I hope you’ve enjoyed this podcast. Have a great Christmas. I’ll see you in the new year.
